Complaints
We want to give you the best possible service. However, if at any point you become unhappy or concerned about the service we have provided, you should inform us immediately so that we can do our best to resolve the problem.
How to complain
In the first instance it may be helpful to contact the person who is working on your case to discuss your concerns, and we will do our best to resolve any issues at this stage. If you would like to make a formal complaint, please telephone the office on 020 8505 4777 or email office@thirskwinton.co.uk and ask for a full copy of our complaints procedure to be sent to you. Making a complaint will not affect how we handle your case.
What to do if we cannot resolve your complaint
The Legal Ombudsman can help you if we are unable to resolve your complaint ourselves. They will look at your complaint independently and it will not affect how we handle your case.
Before accepting a complaint for investigation, the Legal Ombudsman will check that you have tried to resolve your complaint with us first. If you have, then you must take your complaint to the Legal Ombudsman:
- within six months of receiving a final response to your complaint; and
- no more than one year from the date of the act or omission being complained about; or
- no more than one year from when you should reasonably have known there was cause for complaint.
If you would like more information about the Legal Ombudsman, please contact them.

Complaints about notarial work
Our notaries are regulated through the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury (The Faculty Office, 1 The Sanctuary, Westminster, London SW1P 3JT; telephone 020 7222 5381; www.facultyoffice.org.uk).
If you are dissatisfied about the notarial service you have received, please contact the notary concerned in the first instance. If we are unable to resolve the matter, you may complain to the Notaries Society, of which our notaries are members, which operates a complaints procedure approved by the Faculty Office. The procedure is free to use and is designed to provide a quick resolution. Please write, without enclosing original documents, with full details of your complaint to: The Secretary of The Notaries Society, PO Box 1023, Ipswich IP1 9XB, or email secretary@thenotariessociety.org.uk. If you have any difficulty making a complaint in writing, please call the Notaries Society or the Faculty Office for assistance.
Even if you have your complaint considered under the Notaries Society approved complaints procedure, you may at the end of that procedure, or after a period of eight weeks from the date you first notified the notary that you were dissatisfied, make your complaint to the Legal Ombudsman at the address above, if you are not happy with the result.
