Our fees
We want you to understand what your matter is likely to cost before you commit to it. This page explains how we charge, and links to detailed price information for the services where we publish it.
How we charge
Most of our work is charged on the basis of the time spent, at an hourly rate that depends on the seniority of the lawyer handling your matter. We tell you the rate that applies before we start, and we record time in six-minute units. Where the scope of the work can be defined in advance, for example a straightforward will, a lease extension or an undisputed debt claim, we will usually offer a fixed fee.
Before any matter begins you will receive a written estimate or fee agreement and our terms of business. If the scope changes, or something unexpected arises, we tell you promptly and give you a revised estimate. VAT is charged at the prevailing rate, currently 20%, on our fees and on most disbursements.
Disbursements
Disbursements are payments we make to third parties on your behalf, such as court fees, Land Registry fees, search fees, counsel's fees or the Legalisation Office fee for an apostille. We pass these on at cost and identify them separately on our invoices.

Funding and payment
We accept payment by bank transfer and by debit or credit card through our secure online card payment facility. We will usually ask for a payment on account of costs at the outset, and we bill at regular intervals so that you can keep track of what has been spent. We do not undertake publicly funded (legal aid) work.
